What is Agentic AI?
Most of us are now used to traditional AI tools: you ask a question, they give an answer. Agentic AI goes a step further. It behaves more like a goal-driven assistant that can:
- Perceive what’s happening
- Decide on the next best action
- Act within defined boundaries
- Learn from the outcome
All without needing you to prompt it at every step.
A simple example:
- Traditional AI: you ask for tomorrow’s weather; it gives you a forecast.
- Agentic AI: with permission to see your calendar and travel details, it not only gives the forecast, but it also notices you’re flying tomorrow, checks conditions at the departure airport for likely delays, and prompts you to allow more time – or to pack an umbrella.
Here are three work-related examples of the difference between traditional and Agentic AI:
When you want to generate a report:
Traditional AI will produce the report, following your instructions
Agentic AI will produce the report, but also notice gaps in data, gather missing information and suggest improvements
When you want to analyse investment data:
Traditional AI will analyse your data when prompted, suggesting explanation for trends or running predictive models when asked
Agentic AI will monitor your data pipelines continuously, detect anomalies, perform deeper analyses or alert relevant people
When you want to make strategic decisions:
Traditional AI will use predictive analytics to forecast sales, customer churn or other KPIs you set
Agentic AI will ingest data from multiple sources, then orchestrate simulations or generate a prioritised action plan. It will adjust its internal simulation models in light of actions you take, to make smarter recommendations in the future.
Agentic AI’s deeper level of sophistication doesn’t mean it is sentient or conscious. It is just trained – with strong guardrails and human steering - to ‘behave’ in a more independent way to achieve the goals you set for it.
Why does Agentic AI matter now?
Agentic AI matters to businesses now because of its ability to:
- Boost efficiency: by orchestrating workflows and automating/optimising decisions based on continuous monitoring
- Take initiative: with human oversight, of course, but without the need for constant manual handoffs
- Improve security: by reducing the chance of human errors and enforcing compliance at every step.
How do you start to explore Agentic AI?
At Synetec we like to think of Agentic AI as the leap from asking questions to actually getting things done. And we’re here to help you make that leap safely, strategically and efficiently.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to show you how we do this:
1. Draw up an AI roadmap and carry out sprints
We identify where Agentic AI can deliver the biggest gains for your business and prioritise implementation accordingly.
2. Put in place safe AI data foundations
We build secure, compliant data foundations using Azure and Microsoft tools, enabling you to adopt Agentic AI safely.
3. Build and integrate
We deploy agents with human-in-the-loop approvals, monitoring and escalation pathways to ensure traceable, safe actions.
4. Identify where private LLMs / local AI is more appropriate
For sensitive workloads, we keep data in-house using private or local AI models, balancing performance, cost and regulatory requirements.
5. Build in workflow automation
We transform manual processes into automated, governed flows to reduce manual handoffs and errors, and to free up your teams to focus on higher-value work.
