Excel & Bloomberg Development

Problem

Our client, a London-based boutique asset management firm, required a cost effective application to display the intra-day performance of their portfolios using the live pricing data available through the Bloomberg Terminal.

At the time the firm had no consistent way of monitoring such data intra-day

The solution had to integrate with the existing systems used by the company, but infrastructure restrictions required that the solution should be deployed as a desktop application

Synetec’s Solution

Synetec developed an MS Excel based solution that used Bloomberg's Desktop API and DDE products along with VBA to provide live pricing information and calculate intra-day performance for the client's portfolios.

The application automatically queries the existing accounting application for holdings information which were then loaded and linked to the pricing feed.

Various graphical and tabular reports can be generated within the Synetec application, and exported in a number of ways.

Results and Benefits

Our client found that a consistent method of calculating and viewing intra-day performance was of great benefit, providing a source of accurate and up-to-date information to aid investment decisions especially in a volatile market.

Additionally, using MS Excel as the base had many benefits, such as:

  1. It did not require any additional software licences to run
  2. It provided users with a user interface with which they were familiar, allowing for easy adoption of the application. Users were able to further manipulate the data in external Excel spreadsheets of their own design.
  3. It is an industry-standard technology
